Beginning in the fall of 1998, the Florida Medical Entomology Laboratory (FMEL) began to offer a Volunteer Nature Stewardship Class for the adjacent Oslo Riverfront Conservation Area (ORCA). In the early days the class was underwritten by a grant from the Florida Advisory Council on Environmental Education. After that, a very generous anonymous donor set up an endowment with the University of Florida so that the class could continue.
Covid disrupted so much, and no class was offered in 2021, 2022, and early 2023. Outdoor nature walks have continued.
Ongoing indoor educational activities for veteran volunteers, as well as a new volunteer class, are slated resume in late 2023. Pictured above and below is an ongoing education class for veterans offer on 2-9-2008 in the FMEL Boathouse.
