Not only Florida Scrub-Jays

Doug Sutherland (Class of 2013) co-led with Nancy Soucy on the scrub-jay walk at North Sebastian Conservation Area on 3/8/2015. He has provided us with a list of the birds that he saw or heard: Great Blue Heron, White-eyed Vireo, Carolina Wren, Fish Crow, Black Vulture, Mourning Dove, Florida Scrub-Jay, Tree Swallow, White Ibis, Great Egret, Sandhill Crane, Mottled Duck, Northern Cardinal, Red-bellied Woodpecker, Pine Warbler, Gray Catbird, and Northern Mockingbird. The Scrub-Jays posed excellently, but the other birds were not as cooperative, including the red-bellied woodpecker pictured above.

The Pine Warbler is somewhere in this south Florida slash pine tree (Pinus elliotti var. dense), which Trich Kruza (Class of 2015) characterizes as ‘broccoli-shaped’.

Nancy Soucy (Class of 2010) sent this photo of the group, saying it typifies, “how we can all come together and enjoy nature, no matter what our special interests may be”.
