On our walk at the Indian River Lagoon Greenway on 11/24/2019 led by Donna Winter (Class of 2016), we encountered a fabulously friendly red admiral butterfly (Vanessa atlanta rubria, pictured above in a photo by J.R. Williams.
The butterfly graced the head of Bob Bruce pictured above and Karen Schuster (Class of 2009) shown below in photos taken by George Bollis.
Florida pellitory (Parietaria floridana) is one of its larval host plants and is quite common at the Oslo Riverfront Conservation Area, Indian River Lagoon Greenway, and in disturbed places and gardens.
