South Prong Stroll

In 2006 Indian River County purchased 10 acres on the south prong of the St. Sebastian River for conservation and public enjoyment. Known as the Ryall property for its former owner, this property includes a house that will be home to the volunteer group, the Friends of the St. Sebastian River (FSSR). FSSR President Tim Glover led a walk for our group there on May 15, 2022.

FSSR volunteers will be creating a trail along the St. Sebastian River, and in the future the property will be open for public access. In this area near the headwaters, the St. Sebastian River is narrow and clear (especially since rains had been minimal) …

Ferns, cabbage palms (Sabal palmetto), cypress trees (Taxodium distichum), water hickory (Carya aquatica), pop ash (Fraxinus caroliniana), and red maple (Acer rubrum) abound in this hydric (wet) hammock …

Note the cypress knees in the photo above quite distant from the “mother” cypress …

Bald cypress (Taxodium distichum)
Pop ash (Fraxinus carolinana)
Water hickory (Carya aquatica)

Lots of marlberry (Ardisia escalloniodies), beautyberry (Callicarpa americana), and other hammock plants that we know from the Oslo Riverfront Conservation Area also are grow here.

We can look forward to future visits …
