White beautyberry (Callicarpa americana var. lactea) was in full fruit and leafless at Bok Tower when Bob Montanaro and I visited there on Sunday, 12/21/2014. The white variety is far less common than the usual magenta-berried bushes that are now full of fruit at the Oslo Riverfront Conservation Area. Often the clusters of the magenta berries remain until the spring migration when flocks of robins or cedar waxwings come through and devour every last berry.
Whatever the color, the fruits of beautyberry live up to its common and Latin name: Calli = pretty and carpa = fruit.
