Ladies planting day at the (Pelican Island) Audubon House on Saturday 3/12/2016 included Linda Chancellor (Class of 2010), Judith Filipich (Class of 2014), Janie Gould (Class of 2016), Trich Kruza (Class of 2015), Doreen McLeod (Class of 2010), and Liz True (Class of 2016).
Trich & Liz began work on a pollinator planting near the classroom, gingerly placing plants around the menacing ants.
Afterward Trich became the Thistle Queen, removing scads of Nuttall’s thistle (Cirsium nuttallii) that likely arrived along with the sod …
From the front east side Judith & Janie pulled endless amounts of “electric wire”, the fibrous and vigorously elastic white roots of dollar weed (Hydrocotyle sp.), and planted wild coffee (Psychotria nervosa) and myrsine (Myrsine cubana) that was salvaged from the building site.
Linda & Dorene installed spider lily (Hymenocallis latifolia) also salvaged from the site and wildflowers in a sunny location on the south side.
The weeds in the bed that separates Audubon House from the Florida Medical Entomology Laboratory were hand-pulled by Linda, Doreen & Liz.
Some salvaged plants and a gorgeous gumbo limbo (Bursara simarouba) donated by Diane Morgan and John Warner (Class of ##) were added to this planting bed. Note in the background a fine flourishing fiddlewood (Citharexylum spinosum) donated by Deb and Dan Farley (Class of 2015).
