Fair Flower – Faey’s palafoxia

People display diversity & so do plants in Nature (as opposed to intentional cultivation).  Donna Winter (Class of 2016) shared two photos that demonstrate this diversity.  She took the picture above of the flower of a Faey’s palafox (Palafoxia faeyi) at the south Oslo Riverfront Conservation Area last year.

Contrast and compare it with the photo, below, that she took of another flower on January 18, 2020, at the first session of the 2020 Volunteer Nature Stewardship Class for the Oslo Riverfront Conservation Area (ORCA) …

Just as some folks have fair complexions while other people are darker-skinned, the flowers of Faey’s palafox vary from very white to pink to rather burgundy.

Last year I took this photo of a fair-colored Faey’s palafoxia …

… and it contrasts markedly with a burgundy-colored flowers in a photo taken in 2014 …

As in the past, we saw a gorgeous gall on the Faey’s palafox …

Note the obvious exit hole indicative of an insect gall.  Click here to find out about the gall-maker & to this pretty plant that is a member of the daisy family, Asteraceae, that has no petals.
